They Come and Go
by Jeff Harvey
My ex-boyfriend Jack (Jack from Buffalo, not Jack from Encino) swiped three cases of poppers from Eddie’s Porn Emporium on Hollywood Boulevard and I started selling them out of the trunk of my Pinto in front of Club Baths for five bucks a pop to pay my tuition at La Brea Academy to make a film about the kid who shot me when I was sixteen and I only survived since I’d taken a nursing course at El Segundo High and knew how to make a tourniquet with my belt but on the first day of film class they announced the school was closing due to low enrollment and something about an asbestos lawsuit so I used the money I’d made to move to San Francisco where I met Todd at The Rawhide and he invited me to share his apartment as long as I cooked breakfast for him every morning and after three weeks he kicked me out because he said my eggs were too runny and besides I didn’t want to stay there any longer given that Jack from Encino wanted me to move with him to Las Vegas and open up a magic store inside the Flamingo Casino.
